THE SECRETARY: For the information of the many ladies who grace our banquet tables this evening, but who are perhaps not familiar with our customs, it may be proper to say that it is the duty of the Secretary to introduce the Chairman of the evening, and that I am the Secretary and am about to perform that function. The subject of discussion this evening will be found upon the menu cards. The Secretary regrets very much that, ever since it was decided upon, he has been so busily occupied in persuading the newspapers not to declare war until the Sunset Club could have an opportunity to pass upon the question, that he has had no-time to prepare any fitting words of introduction for the distinguished Chairman of the evening. All who realize—and no one can escape realizing—the fierce bloodthirstiness and the unquenchable valor of our great editors, bursting with patriotic zeal to buckle on their shoulder-straps and direct the war and sell newspapers, know that the Secretary has had his hands full to prevent them from forestalling this discussion by a premature commencement of hostilities, without giving any time to the more genial and agreeable amenities of life.
