Great Product, Not Cheap but Worth every Penny if You're a Movie-Phile... Read-on...
By Shyam Sundaron
So, here's my overall take on the projector... With the intent of being objective, I would like to bifurcate this review into multiple sections namely:1) Product Aesthetics2) Product Quality3) Viewing Experience4) Highs and Lows / Pros & Cons5) After Installation issuesSo, if you think it's a long read, well, you're not wrong. It is going to be a very very looong read but please bear with me as I am one of those customers who wished for a detailed review rather than a short one. What this review will NOT be about? : Purchase experience online or from Amazon will not be in the purview of this one as I did not purchase it online and preferred going the traditional route as such projectors for my salary and expenses are considered an INVESTMENT and hence the semantics mandated inside my head to go the traditional route. Here's the Review:1) Product Aesthetics: I fell in love with the projector the first time I laid eyes on it. Was the reason anything unique you might ask.... well, honestly...NO. This projector looks exactly like all other projectors starting from MX520 and above in terms of "Form Factor" and hence there wasn’t anything that stood out. This one meets Function more so than Fashion. Epson, Sony, Panasonic and JVC 4K projection series across all the aforementioned brands meets the looks if that's what you're looking for. This is a POWERHOUSE within the same packaging and boxing.Weight and Feel: Projector FEELS STURDY in the hands as well as isn’t too heavy to be held on a table. One advantage of the projector is that the vents on this projector is on the front which essentially negates "Hot Air" blowing in your face which was a concern in the erstwhile models such as MX511 series. I have the White color and haven’t looked or considered looking at the black color.2) Product Quality: This one as mentioned earlier is a POWERHOUSE! I LOVE this projector! This one has multiple bells and whistles as a part of its overall design. This one is a FULL HD FULL 3D projector and is fully compatible with projecting multiple 3D formats which I will get into in a bit.A few features that this one encompasses:• Full 3D – It plays Blu-ray 3D automatically if played from source, It also plays all other 3D formats such as Top Bottom, Side by Side• Electronic 3D - I have also connected 2 HDDs which are connected to the Blu-ray player and have loads of SBS 3D movies apart from the usual HD 2D movies and this projector plays them so very effortlessly and with such charm! You can also alter the depth (Parallax) setting drawing the picture closer, deeper and vice-versa which I recommend that you do that on still picture as moving the orientation close or far while playing a movie can be dizzying• Multiple Picture modification settings: You can go to the level of changing RGB settings, change the picture tones from Warm to Cool to other variations. Additionally, you can even calibrate colors such as Red, Blue, Cyan, Magenta, Green and other color component settings but CAUTION: DO NOT TRY TO CHANGE SETTING IF YOU’RE NOT A PROFESSIONAL COLOR CALIBRATOR OR DO NOT HAVE A CREDIBLE ARTICLE ON BEST PICTURE SETTINGS• Lamp Life: Benq claims 6500 hours on Smart Eco Mode which really is the mode I recommend as there’s a very slight tinge of drop in the brightness when you select Smart Eco mode but you will not lose a single iota of movie quality in this mode. And hey, whatever helps you prolong the lamp life is always a good option for me ?• MHL : Mobile High Definition Link is when you connect an MHL cable that you get online and you can mirror the screen of your mobile onto the Projector without really connecting it to another source such as a Blu-ray player with Miracast/ screen mirroring software and neither would you have to worry if that software in your mobile as well and this is an absolute plus!• Angled Projection: Now this has completely blown my away! Here’s the deal. With the conventional projectors, the general rule of the thumb says if you need to have a perfect rectangular or Squared screen (16:9 & 4:3 respectively), you are required to beam the image straight. Now I have lived in places where I had to project in a slight diagonal manner as the size of the image wasn’t great if beamed straight. With these conventional projectors, I had to go into the “Keystone” adjustment option and try my luck to get the best possible parallel corners on the screen / wall but it was all a useless endeavor. With this projector though, you can very clearly make it project straight lines / perfect rectangle even at a diagonal angle and that just blew me away!• Short Throw Capability: One amazing feature of this projector that gives it a couple of thumbs up over the Benq W1070 is its ability to project at shorter distance as compared to the former model mentioned above. Now THIS PROJECTOR IS NO WAY A SHORT THROW PROJECTOR like W1080 or others like it but this one is much more refined in its projection capabilities in a short distance and it much much better than W1070 which requires the conventional space to project a 150-180 inch image. To give you an example, I have a small room and from a distance of 7-8 feet, I get an image that’s almost 6 feet tall and 12 feet wide! I love it!!!• USB Ports: Well, with so many bells and whistles mentioned above, it’s no surprise that this comes with 2 USB ports and you can directly plug your hard disc or USB flash drive to play movies. While you can expect an awesome picture, don’t expect great sound as No projector is made for producing “Earth Shattering” audio effects ?• It receives both HDMI 1.3 and 1.3a/1.4 output and HDMI 1.4 is for 3DPHEW!!! With that said, let’s get into viewing experience quickly.3) Viewing Experience2D: I watched the Dark Knight Rises Blu-ray, The Avengers 2D, Pacific Rim, Star Wars Ep 1-6 (paid more attention from Ep 4 LoL), Daredevil the series, Age of Ultron, Lord of the Rings and each movie looked GORGEOUS!3D: I also watched almost all the above stated movies i.e. Avatar and Pacific Rim 3D and let me state out rightly that the picture is GORGEOUS!Colors if you have set them well look breathtaking for wide-pan shots as well as close-ups look incredibly detailed if you are watching a Blu-ray or a native 1080P content. The projector doesn’t naturally upscale the picture. It does what every other projector does… display the native source. There were a few issues of Rainbow effects and ghosting on 3D movies which is also due to my viewing angle or because of the fact that I probably did not wear or charge the glasses well before hand but 3D images look great as well. As far as color drop and loss of contrast is concerned, I honestly did not feel so when I was watching digital and physical 3D content3D accessories: So the projector uses DLP link technology and while the glasses in India may cost a bomb if you look for Benq glasses they’ll cost at least 6.5K a pair, look at Sainsonic and you’ll get a good bargain online although they’ll be shipped from China4) Highs and Lows / Pros & ConsHighs:• Great 2D and 3D projection : All Formats• Plays online 3D comfortable as well• Can be attached to multiple sources like other projectors in this category• Very silent operation : Doesn’t have a loud fan unlike contemporary projectors• Filter-free Operations : Eliminates added service schedules and is dust free to a great extent• Can be left on the table or hung on the ceiling, additionally has multiple viewing modes as well such as front projection, rear screen projection as well as ceiling mode etc.…• If there’s no feed / signal from the connected source(s), the projector automatically turns itself off on Smart-Eco mode which is excellent for the likes of forgetful ones like meCons:• CANNOT Upscale a 4K picture – in case you’re wondering ?• Picture quality depends on the quality of the native source image. i.e. a 480p(DVD) quality picture will never look like a 720P/1080P(Blu-ray) quality picture – it does not upscale the picture imho• One cannot update the firmware themselves like you can in the Blu-ray players5) After Installation issuesI had major overheating issues within 2 months of purchase. The projector used to turn off automatically and 2 red lights under Temperature and Lamp used to go off. It also used to make a very disturbing/jarring noise while playing a picture which made me panic real bad! I had to call up customer service and have them schedule an appointment with the service center. The technician came, opened the projector and studied it very carefully. He took the projector with him and later I got to know that the batch that this projector belonged to had a faulty fan and Benq had recalled all its projectors in this batch. They replaced the fan free of cost and did not charge me for it as well. It’s been 2 months post that and we still continue to binge-watch quite a lot of movies and series on this projector and more so post commencement of Netflix subscription!Overall thoughts, Great value for Money, It does not lack in any dept. in terms of the features that it commits, great picture quality in 2D and 3D and very quiet operations esp. after replacing the old Fan. I love it! And if I need to turn this in some day, it’ll clearly be for a 4K projector once that market matures and content and rendering devices are available at a sensible cost!Thank you for reading and do give a thumbs up if I was able to help you! Cheers!!!

Best Projector under 1L segment! PeriodI picked up this BenQ post a lot of research over Brand/Product/Service particularly in India. It was a fairly easy choiceIts either Epson or BenQ atleast in India with respect to its service availability.1070+ made logical sense because of- 1080p- 3D- Lens Shift (its somewhat helpful even if its only vertical)- Stock Speaker do pack a serious punch- Can upgrade to Wireless Set-up- Fairly Portable- Super Service ( I screwed up my fan it got repaired in under a week)I would defi recommend the BenQ 1070+.Only Con I could think of is Low Brightness in Daylight, that too only Marginally.Im really knitpicking here just so I could list 1 con.
